Ariadne, left alone by her lover Theseus on Naxos, wants to die. Zerbinetta trys to uplift her mood, but she fails. A stranger enters the island, it is Bacchus, the god, confused by Ariadne with Hermes, the death messenger . And he thinks she is a sorceress... The opera by Richard Strauß, premiered in 1912, is well known for her frequent public performance in Salzburg and Vienna.
